well Shut down season is full on Sept-Dec so there’s been no car building for me, but while at work i thought since we have all types of picture thread why not a welder thread. so please if you’re top notch welder or a beginner just post. and lets keep the chit-chat to a very minimal.

i will say it’s been a rude awaken. the reason is the way you weld in school and the way you weld in the field are totally different. the only reason i have adapted so quick was cause i had two journeymen teacher that put me under wing and shown me alot of things that was not taught in school. the reason was cause i want to go oversea welding. i wasn’t able to go oversea with the sub contractor of Siemens and i just miss the the list by one going oversea with Fluor Daniel. so i decide to stay state side for about two shutdown seasons minimum and i will try to head oversea.

so this is the project I’ve been working over the last two weeks. we’re building a new building for a paper mill in GA. so i welded this project by myself with a great fitter name Dean. this old man made my job easy. this guy is OCD that when we fitted the pipe to the tank it was off by just 1″ that he flipped for two hours looking for that inch, that in the end it was the tank that the tank flange was a inch longer. lol. and for the record socket welds suck balls cause they’re easy and really easy to fuck up in sense un-level the whole. i had spend this whole weekend redoing other peoples work.

well i just got home from work and i took two pictures of my 3″ pipe i welded again i never really let cool down, which i toasted the fuck out of the pipe which in stainless its a no, no. but hey i was fucking around and getting paid to fuck around. you also have to understand it was a small coupon so there was really now where so the heat to spread. in truth i had to weld a little and wait till it cools down that i could touch it bear hand, then weld again let cool down and repeat till completely done.


ok, i just quit my job due to i was told that i would not be welding for the next two month and they wanted me to be the instrumentation bitch. fuck that, so i quit and now i’m going to test next week for the tank farms. but i will state i learn alot from the instrumentation people like first you need to be on your P&Q with Trigonometry.(i’ll post pips on tube bending but first..

this is why i stress so hard on welding so much. for instance walking the cup. these are NOT my welds. these are top welders on the nuke plant.

now here what the instrumentation people do. and i couldn’t take pics of the real amazing stuff.







and here was my test. it took me three trys and it was fucking hard. the 90* bends were easy it was the 45* kick that kicked my ass.

So I just got back from work and weld I’m starting to get consistant welding on structural.

Here’s my fillet weld on stainless steel. 304/304L stainless 3/8″ gussett plates to sch 40 3″pipe, 1/8″ 308 filler wire using a Lincoln Electric Invertec V160-T machine at 140amp and Argon set between 35-40 cfh.

Now you know its good when you have that straw colour right when you’re done welding.

Now here’s how it looks after I brushed it. Looking alot more consistant.

And for the record I hate structural. Why? Its not pipe. Pipe is high on the food chain of welding. Alot higher than what people really understand. Even I didn’t understand it till this job.

well its been a while i’ve add anything good on my thread. so here’s some stuff for ya.

here’s my stainless steel position weld, it’s not my best but doing position weld are a bitch and when you put temperature/weather into the the equation holy fuck have i’ve been struggling.

here’s a structural blueprint with weld numbers. this is what a blueprint looks like if you have to have your welds x-ray or visually looked at by a QC.

now this has become my favorite blueprint. two reasons. first i was never taught this in school and second this is a pipe blueprint. its a ISO print.

And here’s my carbon weld getting stainless to look like this is a bit harder and takes time.
